Although over 1,400 fires have been contained in California this season, there still remain 330 active fires, with warmer, drier weather in the forecast. As of yesterday (7/6) there were nearly 20,000 people involved in the firefighting effort statewide, and a large swath of California had been designated a federal disaster area by President Bush. might be my new favorite blog. Half the fun is in trying to decipher what level of irony is intended with each post, if any, and that makes me giggle. Here are a few lines that got me when I first visited the site:

N E WAYS, here is a remix of “Sad Song” that is semi-meaningful. Most Au Revoir Simone songs lend themselves to being the ‘electro-meaningful song’ to put on a mix CD for a girl that you are courting. Entry-level alt girls feel comfortable hearing female voices over earnest electro sounds.

Michael Duff takes the argument over whether some bloggers are being too personal and “oversharing,” and leverages it into examining the larger question of how human/fallible/unrefined we want our artists (for lack of a better, less-pretentious term) to be.

Here are a few gems from the piece:

Fundamentally, art is oversharing. I would say there is no art without it. But the internet has made art cheap, and by the same token it has made emotion cheap.

I think the great artists of history were just as petty as we are; they just didn’t have the chance to blog about it. I think artists are human and I think, fundamentally, people hate that.

I think I’m very interested in the idea of where the internet and art collide, or perhaps how one can answer the question “What is Art?” as a member of a generation that embraces the internet and any technology that aides in self-promotion or self-publishing as a means of expression.

The artist’s statement:

The series Nocturnes comes from the deep desire to document my life. I am interested in the idea of preserving as well as creating memories for myself. My pinhole camera is used as an apparatus of observation. I use it to record the passing of time for the duration of a single night. I open the shutter as I enter my bed at night and close the shutter when I wake the following morning compressing the intimate experience of an entire night’s sleep into one image. The result is the accumulation of the past, the present, and the passing of time preserved on a single sheet of film. I seek to capture more than just a single moment in my life but a collection of moments, layered on top of each other. For me, whether I was alone or with someone else, in my own personal space or in a hotel room, the spaces that I inhabit while deep in slumber become very intimate. These images represent all the information collected in the span of time while I was in another consciousness, creating a visual memory for myself of an event that I have no personal recollection of.
